World Alzheimer’s Day: Supporting Nursing Leadership in Dementia Care

World Alzheimer’s Day provides an opportunity to recognise the vital role nurses play in supporting people living with dementia and those who care for them.

Over the years, the Burdett Trust for Nursing has funded a range of projects focused on improving dementia care, supporting nursing leadership, and developing innovative approaches that place dignity, compassion and person-centred care at the forefront.

Among these initiatives was support for Dementia UK, which developed specialist dementia nursing care for people with learning disabilities, helping address inequalities in access to support and expertise.

The Trust has also funded projects designed to strengthen dignity and quality of life for people living with dementia. These include work led by Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust to support dignity in dementia care within nursing homes, and a project from Bournemouth University empowering nurses and care home staff to lead excellence in nutrition and dignity through evidence-based learning.

Recognising the importance of understanding the experience of those receiving care, the Trust also supported Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital Trust’s Barbara’s Story programme, an innovative initiative designed to help healthcare professionals see services through the eyes of patients and families. By encouraging greater empathy and values-based practice, the programme has helped influence approaches to person-centred care and continues to be referenced across health and care settings.
