Churchill Fellows

For more than a decade, the Burdett Trust for Nursing has played a transformative role in advancing nursing innovation through its long‑standing partnership with The Churchill Fellowship

Since 2013, the Trust has supported 58 inspiring Fellows, enabling nurses, allied health professionals and palliative care specialists to explore international best practice and bring life‑changing insights back to the UK.

Across themes including patient care, nursing and allied health professions and palliative and end‑of‑life care, Fellows have undertaken global research to tackle some of the most pressing challenges in modern healthcare. From pioneering paediatric palliative care approaches to improving support for people with heart failure, dementia, or communication difficulties, their work continues to shape policy, education and frontline practice.

During the Covid‑19 pandemic, the Burdett Trust extended its support through the Covid‑19 Action Fund, enabling Fellows to rapidly develop tools, training and psychologically supportive interventions for frontline staff and vulnerable communities. Their contributions ranging from innovative communication apps to arts‑based wellbeing workshops demonstrate the agility and compassion at the heart of nursing leadership.

The impact of this partnership is far‑reaching. Fellows have shared their findings through national and international conferences, leading journals and media platforms. Several have been recognised with prestigious honours, including awards, keynote opportunities and even an MBE, highlighting the exceptional calibre of their work.

Together, The Churchill Fellowship and the Burdett Trust for Nursing continue to empower nurses to drive meaningful change strengthening communities, improving patient care and shaping a more compassionate and equitable future for health and social care.
