Lewis Manning Hospice Care

Empowering the Future of Palliative Care Nursing

Thanks to the multi‑year £45,000 grant, Lewis‑Manning Hospice Care supported 18 nursing scholars across Bournemouth University, nurturing a new generation of compassionate, confident and highly skilled nurses in palliative and end‑of‑life care. Each year, five outstanding students were selected from an increasingly competitive field, reflecting the programme’s reputation and impact.

Throughout their scholarship year, students received £3,000 to enhance their learning, alongside bespoke mentorship from palliative care experts at Lewis‑Manning and Bournemouth University. Scholars took part in specialist clinical experiences, educational sessions, shadowing opportunities and professional development activities that broadened their understanding of compassionate, person‑centred care. Many used their funding to access advanced training, essential equipment, conferences, books and online courses, resources that would have otherwise been out of reach.

The programme proved deeply empowering. Scholars consistently described the experience as confidence‑building, inspirational and transformative for both their studies and future careers. Several aspired to work in hospice care, specialist palliative roles or elderly care and all wanted to improve the experiences of patients and families at the most vulnerable moments of life.

Importantly, the scholarship had a ripple effect. Students shared learning with peers, developed educational resources for first‑year nurses and influence best practice across clinical settings. Feedback from participants highlighted improved communication skills, deeper cultural awareness and a strengthened commitment to delivering dignified, compassionate care.

The scholarship programme shaped future leaders in palliative care enhancing skills, raising standards and making a lasting difference to patients, families and the wider nursing community.
