Buckinghamshire New University

A pioneering partnership between Buckinghamshire New University, the Buckinghamshire Health & Social Care Academy and the Royal Society for Public Health has taken bold steps to strengthen the adult social care workforce across Buckinghamshire.

Supported by a Burdett grant, the initiative set out to understand the training needs, challenges and aspirations of those working in adult social care, and to cocreate a more accessible, integrated pathway for learning, development and progression.

The project explored the issue from multiple angles: analysing 87 key documents, listening to 31 workers and managers through focus groups, gathering perspectives from sector experts in three workshops and piloting new RSPH training with 24 participants. These insights revealed significant themes shaping the workforce experience, including skills gaps, barriers to learning, the importance of supportive leadership and the need for clearer development pathways.

In response, the team produced recommendations for care providers, policymakers and training organisations. These include embedding a stronger learning culture, improving staff support and recognition, expanding modular and accredited training offers and developing a national Adult Social Care Training Passport. The pilot programme demonstrated the value of accessible, blended training approaches and the vital role of partnerships in boosting engagement.

The work continues through focused Skills for Care courses, new communication materials, dedicated project websites, and plans for journal publications and conference presentations. This collaborative effort is helping shape a stronger, more confident, and better supported adult social care workforce now and for the future.
