The Queen’s Nursing Institute Scotland A group of learning disability nurses from across Scotland co-produced an animation to prevent and overcome inequalities within Scotland's criminal justice system which adversely affect people with learning disabilities. The Burdett Trust for Nursing offered funding in 2019 to celebrate 100 years of Learning Disability nursing. Eight extraordinary clinical leaders undertook the nine-month Queen’s Nurse Development Programme (QNDP) in 2021 and continued to work together during 2022 on a shared issue for development focussed on people with learning disabilities who encounter the justice system. The group worked conscientiously as a team to bring together the script for an animation and a poster highlighting the information that colleagues need to know; those working in the criminal justice system (in general) and those in police custody (in particular). The ‘Think COULD’ animation was launched and has since been used in a masterclass on justice at Queen’s University Belfast and embedded in Scottish police training.
